on the protohistoric site of "Olloy"

(Viroinval - Belgium)

The training courses of archaeology are organized by the non-profit-making association "Les Forges St Roch", in collaboration with the University "Libre de Bruxelles". The excavations are carried out under the aegis of the Regional Service of Excavations of the Ministry for the "wallon" region of Belgium. The direction of the excavation site is ensured by professor E. Warmembol (U.L.B.) and by the architect J.L. Pleuger (F.S.R.).

THE DIG:

It is a protohistoric fortification of the "Tène" period (or second Age of Iron or "Gallic" period). The fortification is accompanied by a necropolis which is composed of several tens of "marchets" or hillocks by stones.

It is located on a rock headland which rises with approximately 70 meters of the close river: the Viroin. Its double rampart is still visible on several meters in height and the fortress extends on 2,5 hectares.

It acts of an exceptional archeological site from its state of conservation and the chronological elements which it can deliver.

OBJECTIVES:

- To take part in the knowledge of the Celtic period thanks to the contribution of new elements of research.

- To try out realities of an archaeological building site.

- To initiate and form oneself with the techniques of excavation.

- To allow the experienced trainees and the students to improve their practical knowledge.

- To form with the management of an archaeological building site.

WHEN IS IT ?

Three sessions:

From july / the 2nd to the 10th included,

or from the 11th to the 19th included (july),

or from the 20th to the 28th included (july).

A TYPICAL DAY:

1.     Wake-up and breakfast at 9:00 A.M.

2.     On the excavation site until 1:00 P.M.

3.     Lunch

4.     Excavations or laboratory until 6:00 P.M.

5.     Diner at 7:00 P.M. then conferences or entertainments

INITIATION AND FORMATION:

INITIATION :

Audio-visual excavations, talks and conferences, films, information retrievals, treatment of the discovered material, stroll guided, techniques of prospection and... parties…

FORMATION :

In complement of initiation, techniques of recording of the data-processing data (Stratigraphic Units), drawing, topography.

Who ?

From 16 years old.

And university students (Université Libre de Bruxelles and other universities).

LOCALISATION OF THE DIGING SITE:

"Olloy-sur-Viroin", country of Viroinval (Southern Belgium).

-    Individual tent.
-    Sleeping bag and mattress of camp-site.
-    Warm clothes, boots, …
-    Solar protection, labels sickness insurance, medical insurance for abroad stays.
-    Working gloves.

PARTICIPATION:

280 €uros  per 9 days period (acompte of 120 €)

535 €uros  per 18 days perio (acompte of 240 €)

790 €uros  per 27 days perio (acompte of 360 €)

This participation includes : meals, workshops, visits, animations, insurances… and all the camp, laboratories and excavations site's infrastructures
